Rev. Jarrett Davis Ragan

Ordained Baptist minister and missionary

The Rev. Jarrett Davis Ragan, 87, of Cleveland, formerly of Toccoa, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home.

a son of the late Carey Stewart and Dollie Davis Ragan, he was born Feb. 3, 1921, on his family farm in Randolph County. He was an ordained Baptist minister, having graduated from Norman Park College, Mercer University and received his master’s of divinity/pastoral counseling from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

After marring Charlotte Bruner in 1949, they served the Lord in full- time ministry ” pastoring at Hickory Head and Union Baptist Church in Quitman, Danville Baptist Church in Danville, Spice Valley Baptist Church in Mitchell, Indiana Rincon First Baptist Church in Rincon, and Hill Street Baptist Church in Toccoa before becoming a missionary with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1963.

Ragan, along with his wife, served in Singapore, Malaysia, SriLanka and India as a pastor, church planter, seminary professor and instructor of hospital chaplains. He lived in Toccoa for a number of years where he had served as Hill Street pastor and counselor at Toccoa Clinic. On each furlough, he was on staff at the clinic as a counselor, and when he retired from the mission board in 1989, he became full time counselor for Toccoa Clinic until he retired again in 2000 and had lived the past few years in Cleveland.

He was a member of the Toccoa Rotary Club and Carnes Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Charlotte Bruner Ragan of the home; daughters, Mary Charlotte Coker and her husband, James “Barry” Coker, of Cleveland, Martha Lynn Ulmer and her husband, George Aaron “Woody” Ulmer, of Taichung, Taiwan; son, Jarrett Davis “Dave” Ragan and his wife, Siew Chin Leon Ragan, of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; son, Karl Stewart Ragan and his wife, Janet Tsun-ye-Lum Ragan, of Suwanee; nine grandchildren, Kietyan Charlotte Ragan, Mengkin Cliford Ragan, Timseng Jarrett Ragan, all of Malaysia, Stewart Yin-Jeng Ragan of Suwanee, Katy Marie Coker Gibson and her husband, Brock Gibson of Good Hope, Carrie Louise Coker Britt and her husband, William Britt, of Vining, Gabriel Aaron “Gabe” Ulmer of Charleston, S.C., Jarrett Allen Ulmer and Zachary Austin “Zach” Ulmer of Taiwan; great-grandson, Chandler Brock Gibson; a brother, William “Louis” Ragan and his wife, Brenda Ragan, of Shellman; an aunt, Jean Barrow David of Edison; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, from Hill Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger Capps, the Rev. Dr. Tim Miller and the Rev. Karl Ragan officiating. Interment will follow in Toccoa City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gabe Ulmer, Stewart Ragan, Brock Gibson, Dave Ragan, Jerry Moore and Jonathan Wright.

Honorary escort will be the doctors of Toccoa Clinic and other Toccoa area doctors.

The family will receive friends at Acree-Davis Funeral Home Friday, Jan. 2, from 5-8 p.m.
