Two students from Toccoa-Stephens County recently completed a two-year college application program.
They are Jaylee Scott, daughter of Tim Scott and Jackie Scott; and Shakira Howard, daughter of Avero Howard and Shika Tukes.
The duo completed a two-year program with Iota Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s #CAP (College Application Process) program.
The #CAP program partnered with The Village Education Foundation’s College Boot to assist the students in their efforts to enter college by providing a hands-on approach that included all the steps from researching various colleges to actually completing the application process.
This allowed the students to be able to bridge the gap between high school and college by demystifying the college application and enrollment process.
The students were assisted in completing college applications, aided in preparing for the ACT and SAT, assisted in writing compelling essays, helped in identifying scholarships and other financial aid resources, and supported them in compiling a portfolio to track college admission results.
The ultimate goal was to improve the trajectory of the lives of talented young people by increasing their potential for success and laying the foundation for positive, productive, and fulfilling lives.
Research shows that many youth have difficulty getting into college because they do not have the support needed to complete the application and enrollment process.
Jaylee Scott was accepted to three colleges and she chose Savannah State University in Savannah where she is majoring in marine biology.
Shakira Howard was accepted to five colleges and she chose Albany State University in Albany where she is majoring in business administration.
Both students have successfully completed their first semester in college and received College Care Boxes which included their respective college swag.
