Shirley Combs recently received the Recovery Champion Award presented by Kathy Whitmire, founder and CFO of The Center for Wellness and Recovery. In May of 2021, when The Center for Wellness and Recovery opened to provide detox and treatment services to those living in the margins of the Toccoa-Stephens County community, Shirley Combs came to the center bringing food for the residents. When she learned that the 30-day residential treatment program provided treatment and recovery services regardless of someone's ability to pay, she continued to provide lunch every day for 10-12 residents to support the work of The Center. Whitmire said that The Center probably “would not be open today without Shirley's support and delicious food, and we will be forever thankful for her contribution to the lives of those we serve.” Residents of The Center presented a painting that says, "Thanks for feeding our souls."
