Habersham County Parks and Recreation athletic coordinator Todd Mayfield has already been recognized at the state level for his work when he held the same position in Banks County.
Now Mayfield’s receiving national attention, but while wearing a different hat.
Extra Innings Softball recently named Mayfield, a Toccoa native, as the 38th-ranked travel softball coach in the nation.
EIS said its coaches rankings are based on a survey of over 300 club coaches nationwide.
Criteria includes active coaches with resumes that encompass both on-field accomplishments (record, championships, top finishes, longevity, player development) and off-field impact. (presence in the community, passion and contributions to the sport)
Mayfield says the recognition is simply a byproduct of following his passion.
“My purpose has always been to give every young lady the opportunity to play the game of softball and to continue their love of the game on the collegiate level,” he said.
Mayfield has been coaching youth sports for more than 38 years.
He’s been coaching softball for more than 20 years. His teams are revered for being consistently competitive and finishing among the best in the state rankings year in and year out.
EIS describes Mayfield as someone who has a passion for softball and always pushes his players to give 110 percent.
“Not only does he strive to get his players college scholarships, but he also strives to see them truly enjoy the game and succeed in life.”
Mayfield’s first experience coaching softball came via his daughter’s 9-year-old team.
That journey led him to a coaching position with the East Cobb Bullets – the premier travel softball program in Georgia.
Mayfield’s been with the program for 11-plus years now and has risen through the organizational ranks to his current title of vice president of player development.
