Stephens County schools are ramping up for the start of the 2022-2023 academic year next week.
Pre-kindergarten will get the new year started on Monday, Aug. 1 and then have Tuesday, Aug. 2 off.
Kindergarten through 12th grade students will start the new year on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
School superintendent Connie Franklin said that as of July 19, 3,897 students were enrolled in the school system.
Stephens County High School had 1,173 students enrolled and there were 881 enrolled at the Middle School.
Enrollment counts at the elementary schools were 409 at Big A, 581 at Liberty, and 577 at Toccoa Elementary.
The Fifth Grade Academy had 276 students enrolled.
Franklin reported the enrollment numbers at the Stephens County school board’s meeting on July 219 system has 335 certified employees and 234 classified employees.
Students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade can receive free backpacks available at school open houses which started today at all the elementary schools as well as the middle school.
Open house times run from 3-5 p.m. today (July 28) at Big A, Liberty, and the Fifth Grade Academy while open house is from 4-6 p.m. at Toccoa Elementary and Stephens County Middle School.
The schools also will have open house on Friday, July 29, from noon to 2 p.m. at Big A Elementary and at the Fifth Grade Academy.
Friday open house times at Liberty and Toccoa Elementary are scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at the middle school from 10 a.m. to noon.
Open house at Stephens County High School is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
The school system has had a number of changes over the summer.
Those include a redesign of the school system’s arrow logo and a new look for the school system’s website at stephenscountyschools.com.
At a July 14 work session, school assistant superintendent of human resources and operations John Stith said that summer projects should be completed in time for the start of school.
Stith said the projects included resurfacing and striping of the student parking lot at Stephens County High School, the installation of new batting cages, a new softball scoring board, and a lightning alarm system.
“Everything’s on time,” Stith said. “Everything should be ready for school.”
