A pair of Englishmen who played pivotal roles in transporting a stable used by American airborne troops in World War II to Toccoa will be the guest speakers at a Currahee Military Weekend banquet on Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning at 6 p.m. at Camp Toccoa at Currahee.
Chris Anderson, a historian with Stephen Ambrose Tours, and Stephens Sowerby of Aldbourne, England will share their roles during the process of getting the Aldbourne stable donated, dismantled, transported to Toccoa, and then putting it back together in the Currahee Military Museum.
“The banquet will return to the pavilion at Camp Toccoa at Currahee this year,” said Brenda Carlan, director of the museum located in downtown Toccoa.
“This is a very special year for the stable, as we will be celebrating its 100th birthday. This event is open to the public and we would be honored to have our Toccoa, and Stephens County residents join us,” Carlan said.
The banquet is open to the public.
Kicking of the military weekend schedule of events Thursday is the film, The Girl Who Wore Freedom at the Ritz Theater on Doyle Street.
Friday’s events include the Toccoa – Stephens County Chamber of Commerce’s annual barbecue at Toccoa First United Methodist Church on Doyle Street.
On Friday afternoon, there will be book signings from 1-5 p.m. at the museum. That evening the Swing Dance will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW post on Savannah Street
On Saturday morning, the Currahee Challenge run will be held at Currahee Mountain followed by the Veteran’s Parade and Re-enactment at 1 p.m. downtown.
Living historians encampments will be at the historic courthouse Friday and Saturday.
A memorial service at Camp Toccoa at Currahee will end the weekend.
