The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter is losing employees, according to shelter supporters.

The majority of a called meeting by the shelter’s board on Tuesday afternoon was in closed session to discuss personnel related matters.

Before the board entered into closed session, several people spoke about issues that included the departure of some four employees of the shelter and the strong roles those employees had made to keep the shelter afloat.

One speaker charged that the employees had left due to the actions of one person but stopped short of naming that individual.

“Only one reason for all four leaving is centered on one person and her inability to work with her employees affectively,” said audience member Judy Golden.

Golden said the shelter should be renamed “animal control.”

“I’ve been there from day one, and what I’m seeing is not what I would like to see,” said Golden.

Another questioned if employees could be given increases in pay rates.

Front seat volunteer Lucy Davis also spoke about the staff’s strong work ethic and care for animals, calling one of those who had left the “backbone” of the shelter.

The board took no actions after the closed session and adjourned.

The next meeting of the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter is Tuesday, July 21, at 5:30 p.m. at Toccoa City Hall.
