The Stephens County Girls’ tennis team made it to the second round of the playoffs for the second year in the row. SCHS advanced out of the first round when they defeated Sonoraville 3-0 on Monday in Toccoa. The first-round win gives them a Sweet 16 date with Crisp County on the road. The playoff win for SCHS is something they want to keep building on from the historic final 4 season the team had last season. SCHS head coach Thomas Flowers said that the groundwork was already laid out for them from the previous SCHS coaches.
“It feels amazing,” Flowers said. “I know the girls went really far last year and were just trying to build off of that. What Donny (Williams) and Debby (Williams) have done for this tennis program is amazing for our community. Really they have set the foundation for what we are doing this year. It does feel historic even though they did it last year but it is still a big deal.”
Earing wins in the first-round playoff match for SCHS was Makiya Hutto in No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-0), the duo of Tenley Boyd/Kalin Snyder in No. 1 doubles (6-1, 6-0) and the pair of Abby Whitfield/Erin Terrell in No. 2 doubles (6-1, 6-2). The Lady Indians clinched the match before No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles matches were finish. SCHS second round opponent Crisp County is the No. 1 seed out of Region 8-AA. The Lady Indians are the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Crisp County defeated Harlem in the first round of the playoffs.
