Ninth grade Stephens County defeats undefeated Winder-Barrow

   Stephens County’s ninth grade football team had its chance to shine when the Indians played an undefeated Winder-Barrow team last Thursday in Toccoa.      At the end of the game the Bulldogs were not undefeated as SCHS ended their winning streak by trouncing Winder 36-8 at The Reservation.

 The third time was the charm for the Stephens County volleyball team on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Toccoa.      The Lady Indians had faced Rabun County two times earlier this season and both matches between the two resulted in a  SCHS defeat.

Facing a team that only lost two games total  in the past two seasons was a challenging task when Stephens County faced Athens Academy on Friday in Athens.      The Spartans’ only two losses in the past two seasons came in the state title games of 2017 and 2018.

Hart County scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away from Stephens County to win 26-13 here last Friday. Indian head coach Wesley Tankersley said he was pleased with his team’s effort, but not the final score. “Obviously you don’t like to lose,” Tankersley said. “The kids are growing.

Williams signs to play in Ireland

    A Toccoa-Stephens County resident has signed a contract to play professional basketball in Kilkenny, Ireland.     Cassidy Williams, a 2019 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., recently signed with the Marble City Hawks in Kilkenny, Ireland, a city of some 26,000 people.

    The 2019 Stephens County Middle School football team wants to finish something that last year’s team was so close to accomplishing.     The 2018 Rebels came up four points shy of winning the conference championship and this year’s team wants to get that job done this season.
