Traveler's Rest offers a look back in time

By: Billy Hawkins, a volunteer host and clerk at Traveler’s Rest State Historic Site. It has been my pleasant duty for the last few months to be a kind of host and clerk at the Traveler's Rest state historic site located just this side of the South Carolina line.

Mountain Judicial Circuit receives Task Force award

    The Georgia Commission on Family Violence (GCFV) presented its Task Force of the Year Award to the Mountain Judicial Circuit Family Violence Task Force at the 25th Annual Family Violence Conference.     The curcuit’s task force encompasses, Stephens, Habersham and Rabun counties.

Stephens County students cast in Cabaret

    Three Stephens students are cast members in the the Piedmont College Theatre’s production of Cabaret.     They are Shelby Woodward of Martin, Jessica Eves of Toccoa and Donald Stoltz of Eastanollee.     The musical will be staged Thursday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 6.

Military Weekend is Oct. 3-6

    Books, simulated barrages and the Big Band sound will invade Toccoa this weekend.     The 19th Currahee Military Weekend kicks off today (Thursday, Oct. 3) and will continue through Sunday morning Oct. 6.

    A meet the candidate event for city commission candidate Inger Neal will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the Star Theater located at 148 E. Doyle St.          The public is invited to attend and share their thoughts with the candidate.

Book signing on Oct. 4

    The Stephens County Historical Society will host its annual book signing on Friday, Oct. 4, from 1-4 p.m.     Several authors with an array of stories about World War II and other wars will be in Toccoa for the event.

Salvation Army gets a new leader

    The Salvation Army citadel in Toccoa recently gained a new leader.     Rebecca Dixson started as the organization's new service center director on Sept. 18.     Dixson is a resident of Lavonia and said that her new job is the first time she has worked for the Salvation Army.

    A farm ministry off Broad River Road is celebrating its two-year anniversary.     Steadfast Family Farm offers services such as pairing apprentices with more experienced journeymen who provide mentoring sessions with horses, farm pets and farm tasks.
