City of Toccoa receives $20,000 in grants

    The City of Toccoa has received two grants from the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) totaling $20,000.     The city received a grant check in the amount of $10,000 to be used toward the purchase of equipment to reduce exposures related to liability and property damage.

Deputy and jailler of the year recognized

    The Stephens County  Sheriff’s Office recently recognized its top jailer and deputy for 2019.     Jailer of the year for 2019 is Sgt. Alex Vaughn.     He has been employed by the Stephens County Sheriff's Office since 2017.

Adoptions at humane shelter increase in 2019

    The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter experienced a better year in 2019 than in 2018.     Shelter executive director Jeff Roberts, in an interview, called it an "anomaly" year due to increases in adoptions, transfers, and a decrease in the need to kill animals.

Metamphetamine continues to be scourge to county

    The Stephens County Clerk of Court's Office recently released 25 felony accusations with all save five of them including charges of methamphetamine possession.     The accusations were the second set issued in Stephens County by prosecutors this year.

One injured in Jan. 20 fire

    Stephens County volunteer firefighters responded to a house fire early Monday morning that injured one resident.     Eastanollee VFD fire chief Jamey Gettys said firefighters responded to a residence on Old Brookhaven Circle at 3:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 20.

Toccoa man dies in Mt. Airy

    A Toccoa man was stabbed to death late Saturday night in a Mt. Airy home, leading to Habersham County’s first murder charge of the new year.     EMS personnel tried to resuscitate Joshua Matthew Canady, 37, on the scene but were unsuccessful.     Kayla Maria Parker, 31, of Mt.
