    Cpl. Michael Vice did not anticipate he would become a K-9 handler after starting as a jailer with the Stephens County Sheriff's Office in late 2018.     Vice is the handler of the sheriff's office newest K-9 officer, Dexter, a Dutch Shepherd.

    Three suspects were arrested during a traffic stop earlier this month after Sheriff's Office K-9 officer Dexter indicated the presence of what turned out to be more than a half kilogram of methamphetamine.

TOCCOA, GA ~ The City of Toccoa will be closing a section of Falls Road for repairs.   The work is scheduled to begin Monday, August 3rd at 5 a.m. and continue through Friday, August 7th depending on weather conditions.

                Two people have died of COVID-19 related illnesses at Stephens County Hospital in the last seven days, according to hospital CEO Mike Hester.                   Those are the first two COVID deaths at the local hospital since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March.

    Stephens County schools will begin orientation sessions Monday, Aug. 3 .     The 5th Grade Academy will hold orientation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that day followed by Big A Elementary and SCMS from 4-6 p.m.     Big A/SCMS will hold orientation again on Tuesday Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tribute, an Allman Brothers tribute band, will perform Saturday, July 25, in downtown Toccoa as part of the 2020 Ida Cox Music Series. The opening act will begin at 7 p.m. with the eight-piece Tribute band taking the stage at about 8 p.m. The concert is free.

    Gov. Brian P. Kemp and Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey are calling on all Georgians to implement "Four Things for Four Weeks" into their daily routines to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19.

    Stephens County High School Class of 2020 graduation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. in the high school stadium.     In-person graduation was postponed in May due to the coronavirus which will continue to have an impact.
