Voting demonstrations available this week

    The Stephens County Elections Office will demonstrate the process of using new election voting machines next week.     Chief registrar Eureka Gober said the demonstration will be held Monday through Friday, Feb. 24-28. The demonstrations will take place at the historic courthouse in Toccoa.

Georgia Farm Bureau addresses state legislators

    Stephens County Farm Bureau members traveled to Atlanta, Feb. 11 to participate in the annual Georgia Farm Bureau Day at the state capitol.     Members of the Farm Bureau delegation visited with state Sen. John Wilkinson, state Rep. Chris Erwin and several other lawmakers.

High kicking Indianettes win state title

The Stephens County High School Indianettes dance team competed in the 2020 GHSA State Dance Invitational on Feb. 15 at Columbus State University. The Indianettes won the AAA/AAAA High Kick State Championship. They were undefeated in high kick this competition season.

Caldwell retires after 47 years

    Gloria Mathews-Caldwell has retired as church secretary for Toccoa First United Methodist Church after 47 years of service.     During this time, she worked for 11 pastors and came in contact with literally hundreds and hundreds of church members.

City of Toccoa receives $20,000 in grants

    The City of Toccoa has received two grants from the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) totaling $20,000.     The city received a grant check in the amount of $10,000 to be used toward the purchase of equipment to reduce exposures related to liability and property damage.

Deputy and jailler of the year recognized

    The Stephens County  Sheriff’s Office recently recognized its top jailer and deputy for 2019.     Jailer of the year for 2019 is Sgt. Alex Vaughn.     He has been employed by the Stephens County Sheriff's Office since 2017.

Adoptions at humane shelter increase in 2019

    The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter experienced a better year in 2019 than in 2018.     Shelter executive director Jeff Roberts, in an interview, called it an "anomaly" year due to increases in adoptions, transfers, and a decrease in the need to kill animals.

Metamphetamine continues to be scourge to county

    The Stephens County Clerk of Court's Office recently released 25 felony accusations with all save five of them including charges of methamphetamine possession.     The accusations were the second set issued in Stephens County by prosecutors this year.
